Alleviating
the Nursing Shortage
...A New solution
Ensuring a Consistent Pipeline of Nurses
Industry leading HR practitioners have invested 4 years to enable selected NHS Trusts to recruit the dedicated nurses required
01.
The Problem
Experienced, high quality nurses in the Philippines, who could help counter the 50,00 nursing vacancies in the NHS, are unable to work in the UK in spite of wanting to work here.
02.
The Cause
Continued reliance upon an outdated inappropriate recruitment model. The supply chain includes organisations that are profit motivated, unnecessary and ineffective. Consequently, dedicated nurses cannot afford the cost or time to attend poor quality local English training.
03.
The Implications
An estimated 70% – 75% of the more experienced, better qualified nurses who want to work in the UK are unable or fail, whilst costing the NHS large financial sums for the nurses that are recruited.
04.
The Solution
A new initiative that generates thousands of vocationally motivated experienced nurses.
Following selection, nurses are offered high quality scholarships to accelerate the achievement of the entry requirements.
The Existing International Recruitment Model.....

In Addition...
Provides No Local Benefits
This traditional model provides no benefit to the developing world whilst removing nurses from countries also requiring experienced nurses
Unnecessarily Lengthy Supply chain
There is no need, legal or otherwise, to use a recruitment agency in the UK other than to increase costs
A More
Effective Alternative
…The Institute of Applied Sciences

2,000 +
Nurses Sourced Responsibly
In return nurses who wish to work in the UK are referred, evaluated and selected for an OET scholarship.
Not for
Profit
With no profit intent, the Institute has and will continue to reinvest funds to generate and train the quantity of nurses required in the UK.
In the Philippines the Institute will conduct leadership training, accredited previously by the National Training Index as best in the UK, for local hospitals. This will help retain nurses that either should not, or do not want to, work abroad without charging any training fees.
OET Scholarships
Scholarships are offered to the selected candidates, so nurses will incur no training fees.
Well defined standards of study and behavioural performance enables further selection as the programme constitutes an ongoing ‘assessment centre’.

World Class OET Training
...Accelerated Pass Rates

The OET programme achieves rapid results applying best UK training standards not previously available in the Philippines. A large financial investment and 4 years of development enables the very specific root causes of exam underperformance, unique to the culture, to be directly addressed.
Dedicated
Nurses
Vocationally motivated nurses, who would not otherwise have considered the UK, will now be able to apply. This increased accessibility is due to the training conducted locally in the provinces, reduced study efforts and no training fees.
Nurses traditionally held back by cultural and religious constraints will also succeed given the phenomenal impact of neuroscience included in the programme.
A Direct Supply Chain
Costs are reduced in the UK and effectiveness improved with a direct structure.
One of the Institutes directors, pioneered international recruitment from the Philippines in the 1990’s. With local knowledge running one of the largest agencies in the Philippines, to UK best recruitment standards, speed of deployment is duly increased.
Improved NHS Recruitment
Selection decisions are improved as characteristics not discernible from internet interviews are directly ascertained eg commitment, diligence, work ethic etc.
Selection decisions can be further improved using best recruitment practice if valued including personal specifications, psychometric profiling and interview training.

Working together
...Works
Just who
is the Institute?
The attractive proposition outlined above or the credentials of the Institute is not enough. Success will rely upon the commitment and collaboration with individual NHS Trusts.
To help develop the synergy, the Institute will design a tailored modus operandi to meet the strategic and tactical needs of each Trust. Variations might include pre OSCE training or selection interviews prior to OET/CBT qualifying through to full Recruitment Process Outsourcing.
During the training over the past 4 years, 30 % of the nurses were rejected in light of their values, performance or behaviour, so the closer the relationship the better quality decisions & nurses supplied.
The Orchid Institute of Applied Sciences is not a management consultancy, employment agency or training company but a professional blend of all three. Bringing together leading HR experts in each field ensures a high performing and ethical basis of HR planning and supply without increasing costs.
The motivation for this initiative is personal to us at the Institute as the nursing crisis has directly touched our own families. The existing approach is underperforming. Applying the same ‘best practice’ standards demanded by the world’s leading organisations will ensure more consistent and higher standards of patient care.
